Photography Composition

Image composition describes how different subjects and visual elements are arranged inside of the image frame. The purpose of image composition is to create a visually compelling picture, a picture that evokes the interest of the viewer. |
Step 1
Watch the video on the Rules of Composition. Make sure you understand each one.
Step 2
Using a camera take three good photos (inside school or outside of school) of the of the Photography Composition Rules listed on this handout.
1. Rule of Thirds
2. Leading Lines
3. Framing
4. Filling the Frame
5. Center the Eye
6. Pattern and Repetition
7. Symmetry

Download all of the photos you have taken from the camera to your computer.

Step 4
Print out a Digital Contact Sheet of all 21 of your photos. Use a pen or pencil to label each one with the rule of composition used to compose the photo. Select your best photo from each of the 7 Rules of Composition you shot and circle them. Turn the sheet in to the class bin.
Step 5
Use the 7-point system for editing on the 7 photos that you selected as your best. (Remember each one should represent a different rule of composition) Put these 7 photos in a google presentation with the before and after shots. The first slide should be titled Rules of Composition and your name. Each additional slide should have the before and after photo and be titled with which composition rule it represents.
